Purpose: These interview guides help you understand stakeholder expectations, gather critical context, and build relationships that will be essential to your success as marketing leader.
Timeline: Complete these interviews during your first 2-3 weeks. Don't wait until you "know more", your fresh perspective and genuine curiosity are advantages.
Before the Interview:
- Schedule 45-60 minutes (CEO/founders may need longer)
- Send a brief agenda 24 hours ahead: "I'd love to understand your perspective on marketing opportunities and challenges"
- Choose a comfortable setting where they can speak freely
- Prepare to take handwritten notes, record it possible
- Review any recent company updates, financial reports, or strategic documents
During the Interview:
- Start with appreciation: "Thank you for taking time to help me understand..."
- Listen 80%, talk 20%, resist the urge to immediately offer solutions
- Ask follow-up questions: "Can you give me an example?" or "What would that look like?"
- Take notes on both facts and emotions. How do they feel about current marketing?
- If they ask about your plans, redirect: "I want to understand your perspective first before sharing ideas"
- End by asking: "What questions should I have asked that I didn't?"
After the Interview:
- Send a thank-you email within 24 hours with 2-3 key takeaways
- Document insights immediately while fresh in your memory
- Look for patterns across interviews—where do perspectives align or conflict?
- Identify any immediate actions you can take to address concerns
